While HBO’s adaptation of his bestselling books offer some same-sex shenanigans (though not nearly enough for our taste), Martin’s source material only includes the slightest hints about male homosexuality. Martin says that’s because his books are told from the point of view of main characters, none of whom are gay.
“I put gay characters in the books, but they’re not the viewpoint characters so I did not have any explicit gay sex scenes in the early books,” he explained at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
Martin admits some of his readers has been vocal about demanding man-on-man lovemaking. “[Since the TV show] I’ve had letters from fans who want me to present, particularly, an explicit male sex scene—most of the letters come from women,” he revealed.
“I’m not going to do it just for the sake of doing it. If the plot lends itself to that, if one of my viewpoint characters is in a situation, then I’m not going to shy away from it. But you can’t just insert things because everyone wants to see them.” Oh we see what you did there, George.
Martin doesn’t seem to have a problem with gay people: Last season he made a hilarious surprise appearance on an episode of the recap parody Gay of Thrones.

Повествование ведётся от лица нескольких главных героев, причём ни один из них не является геем. Это объяснение Мартина. С другой стороны, само существование данного оправдания многого стоит.
